MADURAI: A portrait of British engineer John Pennycuick, who built the Mullaiperiyar Dam, was unveiled at the Madurai District Collector’s office on Sunday, commemorating his birth anniversary. Speaking after unveiling the portrait, Sellur K Raju, State Minister for Cooperation said that Pennycuick still lived in the hearts of the people of Tamil Nadu, having constructed the dam, a lifeline for agriculture in the southern districts. The minister elaborated on the schemes undertaken by his department, including the `80 crore allotted for buying modern agricultural equipment and `2,500 crore interest-free loans distributed to farmers in the last 10 months. “The Chief Minister has already announced a memorial for Pennycuick,” he said, as he referred to the engineer as a hero for local people who many have named their children after. He also announced that the District Development Council meeting hall had been named after Pennycuick.
