KOCHI: The Suchitwa Mission has invited proposals for setting up municipal solid waste treatment units in the state on a PPP basis. The pilot project will be an alternative treatment plant to the one at Vilappilshala in Thiruvananthapuram.   The proposal calls for treatment plants with a capacity of 25-35 tonnes a day adaptable to urban local bodies which can function without bad odour, without dumping in the open and without any significant environmental pollution.“This is part of the government’s drive to the search for alternative technologies for solid waste treatment in the wake of growing number of issues linked to waste treatment. Since many of these are not time tested, the government is looking at doing it on a pilot basis. The main criteria is that the technology must be Kerala-specific. Since treatment plants are generating public protests among the locals, the proposal calls for technologies which will be able to operate in a smaller land area without issues like  odour, leakage, environmental problems etc,” said Suchitwa Mission director N Dilip Kumar.Though the proposal basically looks at centralised treatment plants, the government is also open to decentralisation.  “A minor plant which can cater to a municipality or a smaller corporation with a capacity of say 25 tonnes is also welcome. But even though we have been emphasising on  decentralisation, it has to be understood that it is not possible to avoid some amount of centralisation,” he said.
