Hyderabad: Even as Hyderabad University is trying hard to restore normalcy to complete remaining classes and end-semester examination, the protests are refusing to die down. The students' Joint Action Committee has called for 'Chalo HCU' on Wednesday, calling on students and political organisations to visit campus and register their protest.

A lot of damage has been caused due to these protests. Majority of 857 non-teaching staff and 380 faculty did not work during the shut down. Around 1 lakh man hours were lost due to the shut down.

There were no classes and even libraries were shut. Over Rs 3 crore was paid towards salary, even when there was no productive activity.

A number of researchers had to miss deadlines for submitting papers for conferences. In research labs, equipment worth crores was damaged as they needed daily maintenance.

Damage to the administration continues even as protesting students are allowing classes.

Firdaus, a JAC member, said, "We will not allow Vice Chancellor Appa Rao to dictate his terms. Classes are going on. Our protests will continue and take different ways. Our struggle has become much stronger now."

Students who don't have a job in hand are also worried with just a few days left for the final semester to end. Companies are also apprehensive to come for campus placement even as the University has organised a Job Mela on April 9.

The University of Hyderabad has been ranked among India's best Universities on parameters such as research, academic excellence or placements of graduates. However, this evaluation based on performance before protests erupted at campus. No doubt, the honour has helped in restoring confidence of the University but in reality much needs to be done to put it back on the tracks.
