Hoshiarpur (Punjab): The district administration on Wednesday banned the sale and screening of a VCD, which reportedly showed a cricket match being played between two teams with Hindu mythological figures Hanuman and Ravana in them.
District Magistrate D K Tiwari imposed the ban in view that the VCD may hurt the religious sentiments of people, an official said here.
Tiwari instructed the Station House Officers of all police stations in the district to implement the ban effectively.
The VCD come to light during the Hanuman Jayanti celebrations on Tuesday. The picture of Lord Hanuman carrying a bat in one hand and a ball in the other has been printed on the cover of the VCD, police sources said.
Meanwhile, BJP workers took out a protest march here and condemned the management of 'BS series', which released the VCD, "for showing disrespect to the Hindu deities."
They also demanded immediate arrest of its owners. Later, they burnt CDs of BS Series alongwith copies of a vernacular newspaper of Jalandhar which carried the story related to the cricket match between deities.
Police has registered a case under section 295-A of the IPC (hurting religious sentiments).
Meanwhile, police on Tuesday raided a number of VCD shops and cassette sellers to seize the CDs and ascertain their source of supply.
