Doctors in Punjab say that good marks don't ensure a job in the state.

Patiala: Doctors in Punjab say that good marks don't ensure a job in the state and allege that medical posts are being sold.

Even the Punjab Public Service Commission's results show several discrepancies in choosing candidates.

Dr Mandeep Singh's son topped the Punjab state medical exam last year. Yet, when he applied for the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) he was turned down.

The doctor alleges that government medical posts are being sold to those who agree to pay hefty bribes.

"Bright candidates did not get in. People who did not have a chance did. The PPSC did not even tell us the break up of marks or criteria for selection," says Dr Singh.

A look at the results from the last set of PPSC exams reveals major inconsistencies.

Of the 10 toppers, one of the candidates has taken 11 years to complete a five-year MBBS course.

Another candidate has taken nine years to clear the final exam, while many have failed in the finals.

The state public service commission has also not mentioned the weightage given to the exam results, work experience and the personal interview.

The state government now has promised to take a closer look.

"We just got to know about this. We will conduct an inquiry into this. Report will be submitted within a month," says Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.

"We want the CBI also to look into this," adds Punjab Health Minister Laxmi Kanta Chawla.

This is not the first time the PPSC has been accused of corruption.

In 2002 its chairman Ravi Sidhu was accused of accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh in exchange for providing a government job.

With the same issue rearing its head again, the government will now have to ensure the reputation of its medical services is not tarnished.
