Mumbai: It is the same narrative yet again in India's maximum city. With two days of rainfall, Mumbai is witnessing waterlogged roads, clogged drains, traffic snarls and potholed roads. Given the way BMC has gone ahead with the Monsoon preparedness, this was a predictable outcome.
With handful of staff available due to elections, BMC started the usual monsoon routine like desilting the Mithi river and road construction much later with most work still unfinished.
Commenting on the mess, Rais Shaikh, member of the Mumbai Corporation (BMC) standing committee said, "We should have planned out in December. Execution and supervision itself is a problem in the BMC."
But one area that the BMC doesn't fall short in is the money pumped in for monsoon preparedness. The municipal corporation has allocated Rs 1,400 crore for road construction and Rs 60 crore will be spent in each municipal zone for pothole repair. For trench filling, the BMC will be spending around Rs 20 crore. Surprisingly, no money is being spent on health camps.
Despite concerns being raised by Mumbaikars, The Shiv Sena-BJP ruled BMC says all is well. Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray said, "I am personally monitoring the work. Mumbaikars will not have any problem."
Disagreeing with the Sena Chief, Rais Shaikh said, "I think this time it is going to be worse than last year considering we haven't done anything. The drains have to be cleaned. 50 per cent of the road constructions have not started."
According to Mumbai residents, it has almost become a scripted monsoon for Mumbaikars given the fact that little has been done by the civic body. Clearly evident by waterlogged roads across the city once again.
