KOCHI: Even as the Kochi Corporation struggles to tackle stray dog menace in the city, some residents and organisations of West Kochi have raised objection to the setting up of Animal Birth Control (ABC) Centre here.People had approached the previous corporation to set up a centre to control stay dogs in the area. The proposal was approved by the district planning commission and the state planning board. Kochi Mayor Tony Chammany, along with Town Planning Chairman K J Sohan, local councillor P S Prakash and other officials recently visited the proposed site for the centre at Karuvelipady. It was decided that the building needed renovation before it could be set up as the ABC Centre, a standing committee member said. However, the residents of the area protested the proposal, claiming that the site was situated near a cemetery and an anganwadi. The committee member said that the reasons laid down by the protesting people were irrelevant as the proposed site was far from the cemetery. The anganwadi, too, was located in a different compound. He said that the site was chosen after thorough deliberations. The proposed building is connected by roads on its three sides. If people interfered in such issues, it would be difficult to take up any project, he said. Local councillor P S Prakash said that the people were not against the project, but wanted the corporation to find an alternative place like the veterinary hospital at Mattanchery. The corporation had announced its plan to commission the centre by April-end. Stray dog menace is increasing day-by-day in the area. Walking on the streets during night is difficult, with rabid dogs on the loose.
