MYSORE: Prof Indira, Director of International Centre, University of Mysore (UoM), asked the government to focus on improving the basic infrastructure in its schools to give quality education, instead of implementing the Right to Education Act (RTE).She was delivering the keynote address at a seminar on RTE Act organised by Kannada Kriya Samiti at Maharaja Centenary Hall on Sunday. Stating that RTE Act will create grading system, she said providing 25 per cent reservation to economically weaker sections is not enough to bring changes in the system and improve the status of the students. The government should identify child labourers and bring them to school, she said. She said RTE Act is being glorified by saying that it will accord equal opportunities for children.“People forget that equal education to all was stressed in the preamble of the Constitution. It is very unfortunate that even after 60 years of independence, the government is bringing a new Act to provide education to all students,” she said.Historian Nanjaraje Urs expressed his displeasure over the opinions of the speakers at the function, saying that the negative opinions will affect the spirit of the Act.“You should instead suggest corrective measures to the government.Otherwise, commercialisation of education cannot be stopped,” he said.
