A Samajwadi Party worker was allegedly shot dead by unknown assailants on Friday here in the Juhi area in Kanpur with the incident sparking protests by party members, police said.
According to Babupurwa Circle Officer DSP Pavitra Mohan Tripathi, Raju Mishra was shot dead at around 6.30 PM by five motorcycle-borne assailants.
The victim was talking to some people on the road when the assailants arrived on the scene and opened fire. Mishra took four bullets and died on the spot, Tripathi added.
The body was taken to a local hospital for post-mortem where SP workers held a protest over the killing.
Tripathi said no FIR has been registered so far by the kin of the deceased although police have begun a search for the killers.
Some locals said that Mishra was a leader of the SP's Lohia Vahini but police said that he had been a junior party worker.
