CHENNAI: It was a stunning display of coordination and passion for dance, as more than 35 young students came together for a thematic presentation that loosely based itself on the elixir of Indian classical music: its sapthaswaras or seven notes. This was at the silver jubilee celebrations of dance school Bharatha Natyalaya, meant as a tribute to the school founder Rukmani Srinivasan. With emotion being the very essence of dance, every swara from Sa, the start of the musical notes, to Ni, was associated with an emotion, that ranged from compassion to comical. A mythological legend was attributed to each swara, with the legend enacted in Bharathanatyam. If the note Ri referred to valiance, the swara Ma was symbolic of the comical. Several mythological roles including Vishnu, Shiva, Mohini and Ganesha were enacted as part of the 90 minute presentation.Delivering her chief guest address, Poet Andal Priyadharshani congratulated the director of the school for taking up an abstract theme and presenting it brilliantly. “Dance schools generally resort to presenting common themes like the Ramayana, but this one was special and unique, with varied performances and subtle costumes, she noted. Prof Sikkil Vasantha Kumari, founder-director of the Bala Natya Manjari Trust, expressed her admiration to the dance school for adapting a theme Sapthaswara Mahimanvitham whose details date back to 2000 BC when treatises on dance were written. Also present at the event was Prem Menon, senior vice president and business head, Zee Tamizh. As part of the event, awards were presented to several musicians.
