New Delhi: Hyderabad born Satya Nadella on Tuesday succeeded Steve Ballmer as head of the world's most iconic technology company - Microsoft. It's a long journey for this Hyderabad boy, who now has the job of turning around Microsoft.

Satyanarayana Nadella passed out from Hyderabad Public School in 1984. The school called a special assembly in honour of their star pupil.

"He is now going to be the CEO of Microsoft," said RS Khatri, principal, Hyderabad Public School.

"He would bowl a ball and get selected in the school cricket team. Run 100 meters and become a part of the athletics team. So even here, he has put in his bit and reached the highest spot," said Faiz Khan, batchmate.

Nadella too hasn't forgotten his school. He visited HPS in 2001 to initiate a Microsoft program on robotics.

"It gives me goosebumps, to know our Satya is now the CEO. His technical advisor on a day to day basis is going to be Bill Gates!," said K Phani, batchmate and former co-worker at Microsoft.

Born in Hyderabad in 1967, Nadella hails from the Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh. His father, BN Yugandhar, a former IAS officer had worked in the Prime Minister's Office under PV Narasimha Rao. It was at the school, where Nadella met his future wife Anupama - the daughter of his father's batchmate. Both went to Manipal Insitute of Technology to do their engineering. After completion of his graduation, Nadella traveled to the United States for post graduation.

After a short stint at Sun Microsystems, Nadella joined Microsoft in 1992. 22 years later, he's at the helm, overseeing a transition.

Nadella has a tough task ahead. Microsoft is struggling to match the commercial success of rivals like Apple, Google and Amazon. But analysts point out that Nadella knows his technology, which could give him the edge in bringing Microsoft back as a technology power house.
