New Delhi: Heavy security arrangements have been made at the residence of Justice Dipak Misra after he received an anonymous threat letter. A bullet proof vehicle has been provided to him, while commandos from central paramilitary force have been deployed at his residence.
Justice Misra headed the bench of the judges of the Supreme Court panel which rejected plea of 1993 Mumbai blasts convict Yakub Memon leading to his execution.
Delhi Police has registered a case after a threat letter was found near the back entrance of the judge's house at Tughlak Road on Wednesday The letter stated that Justice Misra will be targeted even if his security is increased.
Justice Misra's personal security officers were doing a security check, when they found the letter. Senior police officers were immediately informed. Special Commissioner (law and order) Deepak Mishra visited his residence and did a security audit, police said.
It is believed that those behind threat letter did a recce of Misra's residence.
Soon after the three-bench gave the verdict, security of three judges was increased.
Memon was convicted in 2007 for his role in the 1993 Mumbai blasts in which 257 people were killed. Charges of financing the terror attacks that were masterminded by his older brother Tiger and underworld don Dawood Ibrahim were levelled against him.
In 2013, the Supreme Court upheld his death sentence. A mercy petition filed by his brother on his behalf was turned down by President Pranab Mukherjee.
He was hanged on July 30 after a night of unprecedented legal action. In the days leading up to the day of execution, several pleas of relief to him were filed and rejected.
His lawyers and activists had claimed that since he had cooperated with investigators, he did not deserve a death penalty.
