New Delhi: In an incident that may once again heighten tensions between India and Pakistan, 23 Indian passports of Sikh pilgrims who wanted to visit gurudwaras in the neighbouring country have gone missing from the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi.
The matter, which has led to a security scare, was brought to the notice of the ministry of external affairs after several of these passport holders filed an FIR with the police. The ministry immediately swung into action and revoked all missing passports. It has also taken up the issue with the Pakistan High Commission, reported Times of India.
Many of the pilgrims who lost their passports also wanted to visit Kartarpur Sahib, where the ceremony for a religious corridor was held month.
Pakistan had issued visas to over 3,800 Sikh pilgrims to participate in the birthday anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev there from November 21-30. These visas were given in addition to those issued to Sikh pilgrims participating in the event from other countries, the Pakistan High Commission had said in a statement in November.
Pakistan has denied any involvement and blamed a Delhi-based travel agent for the missing passports.
