BANGALORE: As part of the workshop ‘Seeing is Believing’, a continuing programme to increase awareness among the medical fraternity, Narayana Nethralaya on Sunday demonstrated a live session on refractive lens and cornea surgeries.The workshop, jointly organised by Narayana Nethralaya Postgraduate Institute of Ophthalmology, Karnataka Ophthalmic Society and Bangalore Ophthalmic Society, was inaugurated by Dr K S Sriprakash, Vice Chancellor, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences.Cataract and refractive error contribute to more than 80 percent of avoidable blindness in India, as per the recent statistics from Vision 2020 India Forum.“Thanks to medical and surgical advancements in recent years, people suffering from multiple eye ailments are able to overcome the disorders with the available technologies,” said Dr K Bhujang Shetty, Chairman and Managing Director, Narayana Nethralaya.During the cornea session, the highlight was, the use of the ‘Wave light Refractive Suite’ for bladeless treatment of refractive errors and the treatment of a disease called ‘Keratoconus’, which is generally associated with an abnormal bulging of the cornea.In the second session on cataract surgery, ‘Infiniti Phaco machine’ was used for cataract removal and then the visual rehabilitation was carried out.
