New Delhi: Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani on Sunday laid the foundation stone of an 18.75 acre east Delhi campus of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU), which will be equipped with modern facilities including solar power panels and geo-thermal cooling systems.

The Rs 285-crore campus to come up in the Surajmal Vihar area, is planned on the lines of the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad, BJP MP from East Delhi Mahesh Giri said.

The area campus will include a 'School of Planning and Architecture' and 'School of Design', solar-powered panels of 12 MW capacity and geo-thermal cooling systems.

"The campus that at present has proposed the hostel facility for 300 boys and 200 girls should either provision the facility for 300 boys and 300 girls equally or make it for 300 girls and 200 boys", Irani said.

It is also said to be the first university campus of East Delhi, Giri claimed.

"East Delhi has waited long for an educational institution like this. The campus will fulfill the needs of the students residing here," the minister said.

Irani said a Memorandum of Understanding between the campus and the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) will be signed soon, under which the students would be able to work with the civic body during their third year.

Giri, on the occasion, emphasised on the "40 per cent youth population" which is the "highest in his constituency" in comparison to others and said that a university campus like this was the need of the hour.

"As I promised in elections, the work with respect to the campus has been started in five months. East Delhi is considered as the most backward region and has longed for progress for years," Giri said, adding, this will be the first campus where 80 per cent students will be admitted from Delhi only.

He attacked both Congress and Aam Aadmi Party for allegedly not looking after the development of the constituency.

"One government only opened liquor shops in the area and another 50-day government made false promises," the MP said. Located in Dwarka, the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University was established by the Government of Delhi in 1998.
