BANGALORE: Ahead of the 47th annual convocation scheduled to be held in January 2012, Bangalore University (BU) Vice-Chancellor Dr N Prabhu Dev has stated that the university would pool in resources to continue with the traditional method of giving gold medals to meritorious students despite the rise in gold rates and low endowment funds.“We have already started the process of making gold medals. We are not counting on donors this time. Like last year, BU will bear the costs for the medals. Deserving students will get medals in the upcoming convocation,” Prabhu Dev told Express.During the 46th Convocation held in February this year, BU had decided to use its own funds to present medals to toppers in the university as the money deposited by donors of various gold medals was insufficient and that gold prices were skyrocketing in the past few years. “This time, we have around Rs 5 lakh of deposits and only two medals are ready. So, we have already initiated the process of making medals with our own resources,” the VC said.To meet the expenses on the gold medals without straining the budget of the university, a decision was taken by the VC last year to discontinue the practice of hosting official post-convocation dinners. As many as 140 students of different disciplines received 208 gold medals last time.
