New Delhi: A Mumbai court turned down the bail application of actor Suraj Pancholi in Jiah Khan suicide case on May 21. While Suraj's arrest has sparked off rumors of Suneil Shetty's decision to re-consider daughter Athiya's launchpad, the actor opens up to IBNLive about his plan of action to help her make it big in the industry and why nothing can deter him from supporting Suraj. Excerpts...
The showbiz industry is inundated with instances which revolve around violent and rough catfights and ego clashes between actors. How do you manage to stay away from such controversies?
When it comes to male actors, the bond they share is unbelievable and strong. There is no enmity and ego clashes between them. I genuinely feel my performance in 'Enemmy' is one of the best and it has happened after a long time. I have given my heart and soul to this film, but I can't deny the fact that I have limitations as an actor. However, working with actors like Mithun Chakraborty, Kay Kay Menon and Johnny Lever has helped me surpass myself.
Your daughter is gearing up for her Bollywood debut. Does that make you feel anxious?
No. For, I know she is in safe hands and is getting the best film. It is great to know that she has made enough news even before she begins her career, which even I couldn't when I started as an actor.
You've known Suraj Pancholi, who has been charged with the abetment of actress Jiah Khan's suicide. How is he as an individual?
Suraj is a fantastic kid. You have been following the news related to Jiah Khan's death case. And in the last two weeks, we have seen enough twists and turns.
Do you think Suraj Pancholi is just being framed?
Jiah's death is very unfortunate. But it is unfair to dump a kid (Suraj) without any proof. At times, even innocent people are hanged and those who are responsible go scot-free.
Are you supporting Suraj Pancholi?
I'm supporting what is right. I don't care about what people think and say. Eventually, the truth will come out. I know this isn't the truth. Jiah and Suraj must have had problems. But what has happened with Jiah and Suraj is wrong. The case is shocking because the outcome is shocking. Someone is dumped on the basis of letters! And now it is being said that the handwriting in the letters isn't the same! Tell me, if I have been a friend to you, will I not stand by you in hard times? How can I just ignore you, just because things aren't working in your favour. That's how I am.
Having spent over two decades in the showbiz industry, you know how Bollywood functions. Is not dreading Friday one of the many tips you've given to your daughter Atiya?
Yes, I advise Atiya to be mentally prepared for the release date of her films. But I also tell her to learn from mistakes and move on in life. I have never tom-tomed about anything. In my career, I have accepted failures gracefully, never gone out of my way to put in stories with the help of the media. I know media persons are always present to support me, but I have never asked anybody for any help. But when it comes to my daughter, I will play the game every father plays. By this I mean I will leave no stones unturned to help her make it big in the showbiz industry, and to ensure she doesn't make any mistakes. I will take care of that.
Many actors have admitted to being scared of the release date of their films as it can either make or mar their careers. Do Fridays still send shivers down your spine?
Friday fear doesn't carry any significance in my life. I have been in the industry for close to 23 years and I have been very clear about the fact that if Friday governs my life, then the days from Saturday to Thursday are controlled by me. So it is all about having the right kind of attitude in life. Failure at BO doesn't matter to me, for that doesn't mean failure in life. I have seen success and an unbelievable audience. I agree making mistakes in my life, but I have also got to learn a lot from them. Irrespective of what happens, I like to stay positive in life.
