Machilipatnam (Andhra Pradesh): Mahatma Gandhi's granddaughter Usha Gokani on Monday linked the 'Swachh Bharat' drive with the economic strength of the country and endorsed the initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"Clean India movement is completely associated with the economic strength of the country," Gokani said while addressing a gathering at Avanigadda in Krishna district. She invoked Mahatma Gandhi to underline the importance of cleanliness.
"Mahatma Gandhi had said that sanitation is more important than independence. India is still a developing country because of poverty, lack of education, lack of cleanliness and other social issues, and we need to eliminate all the bad things from society that are obstructing growth of our country," she said.
Gokani said the Swachh Bharat campaign launched by the Prime Minister will solve problems of sanitation by enhancing the techniques of waste management.
Deputy Speaker of Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly M Buddaprasad said the state government had already sanctioned Rs 15,000 per household to construct toilets under the cleanliness programme.
On the occasion, nearly 2,000 students from various schools, dressed as the Mahatma, organised a rally to spread awareness about the clean India campaign.
