CHENNAI: Voter population of Tamil Nadu has crossed the five crore mark for the first time, registering a 6.5 per cent increase in the overall size of the electorate, after the summary revision of the elecrtoral rolls ended on November 11, 2011.Tirupur district has the highest number of new voters (10 per cent) while Ariyalur the lowest (3.78 per cent). Among Assembly constituencies, Sozhinganallur has 13.47 per cent of new voters and Padmanabhapuram has the lowest percentage of new voters (0.8). Chennai recorded a growth of 6.61 per cent in the electorate.Of the 38.98 lakh applications received for inclusion into electoral roles, around 85 per cent of the applications (33.26 lakh ) were accepted and 2.53 lakh names were deleted due to shifting, death of electors and duplicate entries, Chief Electoral Officer Praveen Kumar told mediapersons at a press conference here. Praveen Kumar said there was a net addition of 30.72 lakh voters in the final roll of the Special Summary Revision, 2012.The number of voters in age groups: 18-19 years - 16.77 lakh; 20-24 - 50.06 lakh; 25-29 - 66.29 lakh; 30-39 - 125.66 lakh; 40-49 - 102.64 lakh; 50-59 - 71.47 lakh; 60-69 - 45.67 lakh; 70-79 - 20.39 lakh; and 80 Plus - 5.36 lakh.He said as per the final electoral rolls following the special summary revision conducted between October 24 and November 11, the total electorate in Tamil Nadu stood at 5.04 crore. The number of male voters stood at 2.53 crore and the female voters stood at 2.50 crore. The number of transgenders who have registered as voters increased from 1,568 to 2,175.The CEO said Electors Photo Identity Cards have been issued to 99.61 per cent voters in the State. However, 66,000 voters in Chennai and 1,300 voters in Kancheepuram district were yet to have their photos in the electoral rolls.
