BANGALORE: Home to tree-lined boulevards, luxury apartments, educational institutions and posh bungalow, Koramangala is probably one of the most affluent localities that the city could boast of. While the description gives an impression of an upscale area complete with all the basic facilities, the reality is far cry.Like any other locality in the city, Koramangala too is crippled by the condition of its roads. The Hosur Road and Sarjapur Main Road junction before St John’s Hospital and 100 Feet Road bear testimony to the plight of the roads here. While the former is still manageable as the roads are wider and there is always an option to cut across on to the service road, the latter does not offer its commuters the same respite. The road that is barely wide enough to accommodate two buses abreast it riddled with potholes. What adds to the commuter’s woes is that there are a handful of these craters at the 8th Main signal. “Those who commute on the road on a regular basis know where the potholes area and manage to avoid it without any harm done. Those who aren’t well versed with the locality’s roads, are in for a rude shock. Many a times while awaiting for the signal to turn green I have been splashed at by ignorant motorists,” said Hira, a resident of 3rd Block. Frustrated with the civic bodies inability to sustain smooth and pothole free roads she said, ”I have been living here for years now. A few years ago, when they had ashpalted 8th Main, the work done was so shabby that potholes began emerging as the monsoons arrived the following year. It has been mended a number of times, but in vain.”100 Feet Road bears signs of the pathetic condition that the road would eventually end up in if not sorted immediately. Being one of the most important and busy roads in the locality it is of utmost importance that the Palike pays head to the situation before the condition deteriorates. The road is also the focal point for many other busy main roads, such as the Intermediate Ring Road that links Old Airport Road with Hosur Road and Electronics City, Sarjapur Road that leads towards the Outer Ring Road and 80 Feet Road that connects Viveknagar and MG Road. When contacted, BBMP chief engineer South Prakash said, “Unfortunately I don’t know much about the situation as I was recently transferred. However, I will look into the matter and instruct my engineers to get it fixed as soon as possible.”
