BANGALORE: For 24-year-old Priya, a resident of 13 Main Indiranagar, getting up in the morning is an issue. Being a call centre employee she works late in the night and starts only by afternoon the next day. Her biggest challenge is to get up at seven in the morning to put the garbage bin out when the collectors are making their daily rounds of door to door garbage collection in the area. While the BBMP is now focusing on door to door collection in order to manage the menace of garbage in the city and to rule out the chances of people throwing garbage in open areas, the efficiency of the process is something that the BBMP probably is not looking at. Says Priya, “The collectors come everyday in the morning between 7 and 7.30 am. Since I work late, putting the garbage out in the morning is a problem.Hence, the garbage needs to be dumped somewhere. Most of us dump it in a common dumping site from where the BBMP van then collects it.” With no dustbins in the area, the garbage is thrown at a ‘collection point’. In the morning a three wheeler vehicle is assigned in the area. For those who live in apartments, a facility of door to door collection is provided. However, these collectors come only once in the day — early mornings — which is not feasible for all. Hence, with no choice left the residents throw the garbage on the road, which further initiates a plethora of problems for people living in the area.Says Dr Kumar, a resident of Indiranagar 13 Main, “The main problem arises because there are no dustbins.Though BBMP wants to encourage the door to door collection process, many are not able to make it in the morning. So if there is a big dust bin that could be kept, people would not throw the garbage on the road, instead they would throw it in the bin which would further make it easier for the collectors to clean up the area. Of course you can’t do much about the dogs and cattle which eat the garbage that spill out in the area. But I think providing a bin would maintain some order.” At present the residents who live in the area close to the ‘dumping site’ face problems of foul odour.Says Sangita, resident, “It is difficult to keep the windows open. The whole area has a disturbing odour. It is a nice concept to have door to door collection but then it is evident from the garbage dumped on the road that not all are able to keep their bin out. If it is difficult to get up in the morning, then the option of keeping the bin out in the night also does not work.Since I live in an apartment, the society does not allow us to keep the bins out. Further, on the first and second floors the dogs and cats come and spill the garbage. Hence it is impossible to keep the bin out.” She further adds, “I do not see why the BBMP can’t provide a bin. How difficult is that? The bin could be used by the people who are not able to get up in the morning.” While speaking to the corporator K ChandraShekar, he pointed out that, “Everyday in the morning, the three wheeler vehicle comes to collect the garbage. Other than that we are encouraging door to door collection so that the garbage is collected once and for all in the morning.People are very inconsiderate and irresponsible. They do not throw the garbage in the morning and then blame us.” He further added, “A dustbin could be a solution and would help. I would look into the matter and make sure the area is cleaned.”
