A lot of things about "Television News" have changed - the pace , the content , the look.. basically the priorities - what hasn't changed is the good old discussion show.
Typically a half hour discussion show has three experts , one for the motion , one against and one neutral. A primetime discussion show like our very own "Face
the Nation" is generally based on the days top news which varies from channel to channel , for eg. A hindi channel would normally pick Raju Srivastav's
ankle sprain as top news over America invading Iran. I call these discussions "Maggi Chats" : instant and non satisfying but a snack never the less.
I have compiled a list of the top ten Television News Speakers. For me a panelist should be sharp , knowledgeable and always "to the point"...because the over
all chat time is sooooooooo less , also Television is visual medium so the looks matter....
Here is the list :
10.) Ramchandra Guha (Historian) : He talks with great enthusiasm , he has the glasses and the awry hair , somewhat like a space scientist - Perfect TV.
Ram knows his subject inside out and combines his immense knowledge with some humor so you never get tired of watching him .
9.) Madhu Trehan (Columnist) : the first of the two ladies on the list , Madhu Trehan is always a treat to watch . She has a certain "Outlaw" look to her , which reflects in her arguments . It is a pity she has been type cast in speaking on issues only related to the media.. mostly on issues such as moral policing etc.
8.) Harish salve (Sr. Lawyer) : when it comes to debating you just cant beat the lawyers , and Salve is the "Shark". He is always very relaxed before the
discussions : like the silence before the storm. I remember a particular reservation debate where he totally demolished the other panelists. He is relentless
and he always manages to do that in cute way.
7.) Lallu Prasad Yadav (Politician) : a lot of you would be thinking how can anybody beat lallu , and that lallu is the best TV ever since Mahabharat -I agree.
But the reason why Lallu Yadav is lucky number seven is simply because he is more of a showman than a worthy source of "gyan".
6.) Vinod Mehta (Journalist) : Our Editor-In-Chief once called him the grand young man of Indian Journalism , and I couldn't have agreed more. Whenever Mr.
Mehta speaks he reflects a certain passion which comes straight from the heart. He is always entertaining , that's why he can speak on any topic and still be
cheered.
5.) Arun Jaitely (Politician) : The Second lawyer on the list Jaitely is a nightmare for other panelists. His arguments are very well planned and researched.
His strongest quality is to detect a weak argument , which he can then attack : somewhat like Karan Thapar.
4.) Piyush Pandey / Alque Padamsee / Prahalad Kakkar (Ad Guru's) : The "Admen" , its really difficult to choose one .
Piyush Pandey is my favourite speaker out of the three but Alque and Prahalad are too good to be left behind . All of them have a great television look, Piyush with the Major like moustache , Alque with the Jinnah beard and Prahalad with the Hat and the full beard. These guys are witty , smart and well opinionated.
We are up to our top three :
3.) Cho Ramaswamy (Journalist) : The bronze goes to Mr. Unpredictable , Mr. Naughty , Mr. Hillarious call him what you want , Cho Ramaswamy is one hell of a speaker.
He is funny as hell , at the same time he knows a lot. His southern accent , "Austin Powers" like spectacles make a great audio visual experience.
2.) Fali S Nariman (Sr. lawyer) : I met Fali Nariman about a year ago, on the set of "State Of the Nation" , that day I came to know what the word "Gentleman" actually means. Each word that comes out of his mouth is backed with experience , he is the only person on this list who I would not only listen to but - believe in.
He has class and wisdom , a rarity with most of the experts , a well deserved silver.
1.) Shobaa De (Columnist) : It's a man's world ? ..well not quite. I choose Shoba De as the Best TV news Speaker because she is - simply the best.
Oozing with confidence she takes on anyone and everyone , speaks her mind and always has the last word. She has a cosmopolitan look which appeals to all viewers .
Her distinguishing feature is the quality to be unique , unique in thought and vision. So Shobhaa De is numero uno on my list , taking home the gold.
That's my top 10 , but like our panel discussions ... its highly debatable.About the AuthorSushant Mehta Sushant Mehta is Senior Correspondent (Films) at CNN-IBN.
