CHENNAI: Acceding to outcries of various pro-Tamil parties, several theatres acr-oss the state have opted out of screening the English film Dam999, which is scheduled for a release on November 25. Parties have been demanding a ban on the film, as it captures the catastrophe caused by the collapse of a dam, said to hint at the Mullaiperiyar dam.Leaders of several political parties including Pattali Ma-kkal Katchi, Vidudhalai Chir-uthaigal Katchi, Naam Tamilar Katchi, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam had on Tuesday opposed the screening of the film, calling it efforts by Keralities and the Kerala government to push their cause for the reconstruction of the dam, by showing the consequences of a similar 100-year-old dam collapsing in the film.“We have decided against screening the film in the state in order not to hurt the sentiments of Tamils, although we have not seen the film to review its contents,” said Tiruchy S Sridhar, joint secretary, and R Paneerselvam, general secretary of the Tamil Nadu Film Exhibitors Association. The dubbed Tamil version also would not be screened, they assured in a statement.Going by their decision, many multiplexes also seem to have decided against screening the film. A decision to not screen the film was taken on Tuesday, said officials at Sathyam Cinemas, while on Wednesday, other theatres like Devi Theatres and Inox also backed out although advertisements mentioned their name.Film distributor in the state RV Mahalingam of Poornima Shankar EXIM, reiterated his intent to screen the movie in order to convince protestors.
