VELLORE: The 10-year old Thiruvalluvar University here has been without a vice chancellor for the past four months. Going by the university’s history, when it has managed the show without a VC for one year and above, the four-month gap is not a big deal. Retired professor Elangovan, a former member of the university’s syndicate and a practicing advocate, said that there was nothing new about the top posts at the University lying vacant, thanks to apathy of the officialdom.“As the absence of heads affected day-to-day affairs besides breeding irregularities, the State government must appoint right persons as early as possible to take care of the helms of affairs of the university at the earliest,” he said. According to him, Dr Susila Thirumaran who took over as the first vice chancellor of the university in 2002 was also the first one to have served her full term of three years in office. The university was without VC for the next one year from November 2005 when Dr L Kannan was appointed in November 2006. Citing personal reasons, he quit his office 10 months before his three-year term came to an end in 2009. And once again there was no one at the top position for the next one-year or so when Dr Jothi Murugan was appointed as VC in August 2010. He too resigned in December 2011 after serving one year and four months, citing personal reasons. Since then, the university has been without a VC.The university also had hiccups in the appointment of registrars since its inception. For the first six months, no registrar was appointed. Dr Chinnammai became the first registrar-in-charge who held the post for the next two-and-half years. Then Pon Sundar took over, again as in-charge for the next six months. Dr Veeramani was the third registrar-in-charge for the next one-and-a-half years before Amul Das was appointed as registrar-in-charge for the next 20 months. Dr Krishnamoorthy who joined here in 2010 is the first-ever regular registrar. As the examinations for the colleges affiliated to the university were held by the parent Madras University for the first three years, the first controller of examinations for the Thiruvalluvar university was appointed only in 2005. Pon Sundar held this post for one year. Dr Mangayarkarasai took over from him during 2007-08. Amul Das was the controller-in-charge between 2008 and 2010. The third controller Dr Rajasekar was appointed in June 2010 and he served for one year until May 2011. Since then the post is additionally held by the present registrar Dr Krishnamoorthy.
