There is no dearth of temples in our country, of which many are ancient and have stood the test of time. Some temples have certain specialities ranging from the different nature of the idol or worship to the material used to build the temple. But do you know there is a Hanuman Temple in Tamil Nadu, set apart from the fact that the Lord Hanuman idol can be worshipped only in the summer season? It is because, during the rainy season, this temple is completely submerged underwater.
This Patala Anjaneyar Temple is about two kilometres from the Namakkal district’s Attaiyambatti division road. The temple is located a few feet below the ground level. There is also a narrow trapdoor entrance to the temple, with one having to descend a few steps underground. The place where this temple is located is surrounded by fields and with a lake on one side. During the rainy season, the lake overflows and the temple gets submerged under the water.
The amazing fact remains that even after being submerged underwater for almost three months in a year, the structure remains unscathed. Devotees can visit the Hanuman Mandir only for 6-7 months in the summer.
It means that worship rituals in this temple are conducted only on the auspicious days of Ammavasai Poornami. Devotees offer Anjaneyar’s favourite, Vadamalai, before performing the pujas. Following this, the deity is adorned with special decorations and tulsi garlands, and additional pujas are carried out. Even now, on the full moon day of Ammavasai, many locals visit the temple to honour Anjaneya. It is said by the locals that this temple has remained underground for more than a century.
It is interesting to note that this temple in Namakkal district is not the only one to remain submerged underwater. A Hanuman temple in Virwas village of Karauli in Rajasthan is submerged in water for most of the year.
