CHENNAI: A week after the mass killing of dogs at an upcoming ECR township, police said that the general manager of the construction firm surrendered on Saturday and obtained bail. The Cheyyur sub-inspector said: “The general manager of Marg Swarnabhoomi, Ramakrishna, surrendered to a judicial magistrate at Madurantakam. The GM was released on anticipatory bail on the same day.” When contacted previously, a Marg spokesperson had issued a statement that they rejected any allegation that slaying of dogs happened on their premises. The incident, reported on November 30, alleged that workers driving a dumpster from the construction site, dumped the bodies of 45 dogs into a nearby lake on Monday. Kamalakannan, a resident of Vellur village who filed the complaint, said, “We recovered 21 bodies from the lake and we were very disturbed.” Blue Cross of India officials said that three more bodies were retrieved on their arrival, although several others floated away as rescue operations were affected by rain.Details of the incident which went viral on social networking websites left animal lovers furious. However, a recent update of an “arrest of the GM” by a source on one such website on Monday, drew responses of great joy. Contrary to this, a police official at Cheyyur clarified, “No arrest was made. Ramakrishna was never brought to our police station, he went directly to a judicial magistrate and surrendered.”According to police sources, no information on the culprits who committed the killing has been found. “The residents who reported the incident told us that two others were responsible. We hope to find them and wrap up the investigation by weekend,” they said.
