THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Three houses were gutted in a major fire at Kadambukadavu near Attukal in the city on Friday. While one house was fully gutted, the other two were partially damaged in the incident that occurred around 8.30 am. The timely intervention of the Fire and Rescue Services personnel helped in averting a major tragedy as the lane was crowded with several houses.

The fire, which originated at one Sreekandan Nair’s house, later spread to the nearby houses of Vikraman Nair and Gopakumar. Sasikumaran Nair and his family members, who rented the house from Sreekandan Nair, were away when the fire originated. Short-circuit near the electric meter is suspected to be the cause of fire. The tile-roofed structure with old wooden interiors and almost all furniture in the house were damaged completely, fire personnel said.

Though three units of the Fire and Rescue Services from Chenkalchoola station reached the spot immediately, it took around one-and-a-half hours for them to douse the fire completely. The Fire persons had a tough time since heavy fire-fighting vehicles could not be brought to the congested lane in front of the house. However, they managed to douse the fire with light vehicles and laying hose for around 500 m.

The fire was so intense that besides damaging the three houses, the window pane of a nearby two-storeyed building broke in the heat. Three fire personnel who suffered injuries during the rescue operations sought treatment at the General Hospital. Station Officer Prince and firemen Premkumar and Santhoshkumar were the injured. Besides hundreds of locals, people’s representatives, including V Sivankutty MLA, visit the spot.
