HYDERABAD: It seems the city traffic police are not just content to impose heavy challans to rein in erring motorists. There are many more innovations in the pipeline to check traffic violators, according to Ake Ravikrishna, the newly posted deputy commissioner of police (Traffic-South). Among the first of those is to make violators take a pledge after paying the challan to not indulge in drunken driving, cell phone riding, jumping signals, over-speeding, wrong-side driving and to carry all necessary papers of their vehicles. Another proposal is to send violators to a ‘road safety school’ set up by the traffic police, where they would be educated about rules of safe driving. This was already put into practice earlier in Vizianagaram district by Ravikrishna during his tenure there and reportedly proved to be a huge success.But the new DCP understands the constraints for implementing such steps in a city like Hyderabad. “Currently we are studying feasibility of the project. As part of it, we are also trying to instil faith and confidence in traffic police personnel first.” Recently, the department also organised a special traffic police pledge as part of goodwill-building measure. According to Ravikrishna, the proposed drive would be conducted once a week and is likely to be launched within a couple of weeks. The DCP said the motto for traffic regulation is ‘self discipline as best discipline’. He said violators sent to the road safety schools would be educated that a person while riding must know a lot of people’s lives depend on them. “The biggest obstacle is building public confidence and attaining their support for the drive,” said Ravikrishna. According to reports, the traffic police issues over 4,000 challans to traffic violators every day.
