DHENKANAL: Three members of a tribal family were killed by a tusker in Thoriasandha village under Bhuban forest range, 65 km from Dhenkanal, in the wee hours of Tuesday. The incident occurred when the family members were asleep in their hut. The tusker destroyed walls of a hut and trampled the couple and their four-year-old daughter Chemi Hembram. Chemi and her father Madan (35) died on the spot while wife Sumi (26) died on way to Kamakshyanagar hospital. The couple’s nine-year-old son Maguli escaped with head and leg injuries. In the last five months, as many as five persons died in jumbo menace in the area under Bhuban forest range. DFO Sunil Kumar Dalai said the Forest Department had released ` 20,000 as ex gratia to the kin of the deceased. He said another ` 3 lakh would be released after submission of inquiryreports.
