UDF-Karunakaran tie-up on the anvil
A tie-up between the Congress-led United Democratic Front and expelled leader Karunakaran's party Democratic Indira Congress is on the cards.

Thiruvananthapuram: A tie-up between the Congress-led United Democratic Front and expelled leader Karunakaran's party Democratic Indira Congress is on the cards.

DIC President K Muraleedharan met AICC observer for Kerala Veerappa Moily in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday. Both the parties are, however, playing their cards close to their chests since Karunakaran is not in Thiruvananthapuram.

An official announcement is expected only after Moily meets Karunakaran later in the evening. Sources in the DIC say the party has the asked the Congress for close to 28 seats in the 144 member Assembly.

The Pradesh Congress has already expressed its willingness to ally with anyone, especially the DIC(K), in defeating the Leftists.

"The present agenda is to win the elections and the political atmosphere is in favour of the Congress. In this present situation, the Congress will ally with anyone to defeat the Left Democratic Front in the state," Pradesh Congress president Ramesh Chennithala said.

He said the talks with DIC K) was progressing and a final decision had not been arrived.

He also said there was unity in the Congress and the United Democratic Front in the DIC(K) issue. "Though the Congress has not officially appointed anyone to talk to the DIC(K), we welcome the Indian Union Muslim League's steps in this regard. The UDF is for a broader alliance to defeat the leftists," he added.

Congress Working Committee member in-charge of Kerala Veerappa Moily held discussions with DIC(K) president K Muraleedharan on Wednesday and is scheduled to meet Karunakaran in the evening. On Tuesday, Moily had held discussions with the leaders of the Congress and UDF regarding the DIC(K) issue.
