BANGALORE: The regional office of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) celebrated one year of launching its Aadhaar facility for the public at the Hotel Capitol on Thursday. Aadhaar Excellence awards were also given to 15 operators belonging to various enrollment agencies working in the states of Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry at the function. The operators of these regions have enrolled more than 7.5 million residents and have generated more than 4 million Aadhaar numbers to date. Deputy Director General, Regional Office Ashok Dalwai said that the aim of UIDAI was to reach 60 per cent of the total population of 123 crore by 2014. “We have increased our enrollment capacity to 10 lakh a day,” he said. Addressing the issue of privacy in the process, he said that the process only aimed at recording 4 demographic details which are very common and cannot be used to track a person down. He also said that UIDAI has committed not to release any information about Aadhaar card holders without their consent. He discussed various ways in which this unique number could be integrated into providing customer support in sectors like banking and public distribution systems.
