Based on the study report, a welfare plan will be implemented by the Corporation in the second phase of the project.STUDY FOCUSThe study will be undertaken in the areas where migrants live in clusters. It will be undertaken by a sample method and altogether 500 children, below the age of 18 will be interviewed. On completion of the study, the report will be submitted to UNICEF.The study will focus on the living condition of children belonging to migrant families. “The other major objectives are to understand whether these children are going to school or not, whether they are engaged with their parents at work and its impact on their education, to find out whether there is any sort of discrimination and to understand whether there exists child labour, sexual abuse and drug abuse,” the official said.The other factors that fall in the scope of the study include the impact of alcoholism of parents on these children, their accessibility to food, water, shelter, education and sanitation, the health and nutritional problems of the children and the involvement of these children in various cultural and sports activities in their place of living. The study is expected to be completed within 3 months of period on getting sanction. The official said based on the outcome of the study, the Corporation will formulate a plan for the uplift of children belonging to migrant families with the support of NGOs and other organisations.According to statistics, there are over 10 lakh migrants living in Kerala, mostly from northern states. Though Kochi is one among the primary destination for migrants, there is no exclusive data base about them and also about the living situation of the children of such families.
