US Open: Federer advances, Baghdatis knocked out

New Delhi: The opening day of the US Open on Monday was a mixed day with some seeds cruising into the second round while others were knocked out from the hardcourts at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows.

World No. 1 and top seed Roger Federer started his US Open campaign with a win over American Scoville Jenkins 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

The Swiss top seed required just one hour and 32 minutes to dispatch Jenkins. Next up for Federer in the second round will be either Rainer Schuettler of Germany or Chile's Paul Capdeville.

"Yes, I thought it was a good match, you know, tough match. Didn't allow my opponent many chances on my serve. You know, I tried to create as many as I could. I was serving well. Unfortunately for him he double faulted quite a bit on breakpoints, which obviously helped," Federer said.

In the men's singles, Marcos Baghdatis was the first big name to fall. He went down to Max Mirnyi 3-6, 5-7, 6-3, 6-7. Finland's Jarkko Nieminen, meanwhile, was beaten by John Isner 6-7, 7-6, 7-6, 6-4 after a three-hour-eight-minute battle.

"I love playing here and it is great playing here, but when you lose everything is so bad. But it was a great match today, great atmosphere. I had fun on the court, really. At the end the crowd was good, but then I lost," Marcos Baghdatis said.
