US sting operation leads to largest beef recall
The US Department of Agriculture ordered the recall of 65 million kg of beef.

New Delhi: An undercover video showing crippled and sick animals being slaughtered has led to the largest beef recall in US history.

The US Department of Agriculture on Sunday ordered the recall of 65 million kilogrammes of beef from a southern California slaughterhouse.

The orders were given after the US Humane Society exposé of an investigation on animal-abuse.

Officials estimate that about 16.8 million kilogrammes of the recalled beef has been already supplied to many school kitchens and most probably already been eaten.

No charges have been filed against the accused slaughterhouse, but an investigation by federal authorities continues.
