Uttarakhand: Schools washed away, students face an uncertain future

Dehradun: Torrential rains, flash floods and landslides not only killed people and destroyed infrastructure but also decimated several schools which has resulted in students facing a bleak future.

In one of the worst-hit places, Rudraprayag, and its neigbouring areas 25 school have been destroyed. There were 5,000 students on rolls in the destroyed schools which had classes from 1 to 12. With the schools destroyed the students are clueless about what the future holds for them.

In Rudraprayag's Gabni village the students have been forced to study in a small room after their school Saraswati Shishu Mandir was washed away on June 16 in the flash floods that hit the area. The school was washed away just when summer vacations were coming to an end.

Now one of the teachers Chandeshwari is running the class in a small room.

As far as the government is concerned, only two steps are taken in this direction. One if extending the summer vacations till July 10 and the teachers have been ordered to report to their schools. But the teachers don't know what to do as the schools no longer exist.

It seems the government is far, far away from the reality.

What's your reaction?
