BHUBANESWAR: The vending zones of Bhubaneswar are unique to the city but they are not free from being misutilised. Many of the vending zones are being used for anything but the original purpose they were meant to serve.Opelfed and Omfed vending stalls across the city were initially given licence to sell Omfed products and eggs. But now one can find many stalls in the vending zones either converted into an extended grocery shop, tea stall or even a fast food joint. This has created confusion and inconvenience among the public. This has been ignored for so long that now people have stopped paying attention. There are around 46 recognised vending zones in Bhubaneswar and approximately 1700 vendors. When asked about the issue, BMC’s Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena said that an inquiry will conducted by the Enforcement Department to see who are violating the rules. Then the licences of those who will be found guilty of misuse will be revoked. Also the extensions that have become fast food joints or grocery shops will be demolished, said Jena. Be the vending zones near Acharya Vihar, Maharaja Cinema Hall or the Rupali Square, one can find violations every where. While some have made minor changes here and there, others have completely converted the stalls to something else.On the other hand, the vendors in vending zones that were demolished for the construction of the flyover, are still waiting for an alternative as assured by the BMC. But they are yet to get any relief. BMC Mayor said as soon as they acquire land for the purpose, the stranded vendors will be provided with new vending zones.
