After a day of high political drama, Modi's magic wand routed Congress in Chhattisgarh as Bharatiya Janata Party bagged 10 of 11 Lok Sabha seats leading to its thumping victory in the state. The ruling-BJP emerged victorious in two tribal reserved seats too.
With 5973904 votes in its favour, BJP bagged 48.7 per cent vote share recording a massive victory in Chattisgarh. The second in line was Congress with 4702813 votes in its pocket, with a voting percentage of about 38.4 percent.
Whereas, the independent candidates fared third as 516427 ballots were cast in their favour bringing out a vote share of 4.2 per cent. BSP, however, secured fourth position as it secured 293910 votes, leading to a vote share 2.4% for the party.
BJP's Dinesh Kashyap garnered 385829 votes making him the leader with highest ballot in Bastar constituency. In Bilaspur, Lakhan Lal Sahu of BJP stood first with 561387 votes. Chief Minister Raman Singh's son Abhishek received 643473 votes in Rajnandagaon seat while party leader Chandu Lal Sahu mustered 503514 votes from Mahasamund constituency.
Interestingly, more voters pressed the NOTA button than opting for regional parties like GGP, CPI, CSM and other parties.
Among the political heavyweights, BJP strongman and sitting MP from Naxal-hit Bastar seat, Dinesh Kashyap defeated Congress candidate Deepak Karma by 1,24,359 votes. Chief Minister Raman Singh's son and debutant Abhishek Singh defeated Congress' Kamleshwar Verma in Rajnandgaon.
In the 2009 general elections, BJP had won 10 out of 11 seats while the lone Korba constituency was captured by Congress.
The major key players - BJP, Congress and BSP - fielded candidates in all the 11 seats of Chhattisgarh. The BJP swept the state with 10 seats, Congress could bag only one and BSP was out on a maiden score.
When we look at the vote share, there's not much difference between the performance of BJP and Congress. 45 per cent votes went to the BJP, Congress bagged 37 per cent.
Even after the sympathy wave that blew in favour of the Congress post Jagdalpur massacre that killed most of its top leaders in the state, the party witnessed another defeat in the last Assembly elections.
