NABARANGPUR: As many as 19 cases were registered by the Vigilance against school headmasters in the district for alleged defalcation of funds meant for construction of school buildings. These funds were sanctioned under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) for infrastructure development of schools under the scheme. Of the 19 cases, the Vigilance sleuths booked cases against nine headmasters and have approached the Director (Vigilance) for permission to file charge-sheets.At Gondiguda village under Tentulikhunti block, the headmaster had shown records to have spent ` 2.40 lakh for construction of a school building. However, on verification, it was found that only ` 75,000 was spent. Similar was the case with primary schools at Dharanabeda village under Jharigam block where the headmaster spent just ` 1.20 lakh against the mentioned ` 2.40 lakh.At Mundaguda village under Papadahndi block, the headmaster of the school stated that ` 4.80 lakh was spent on the construction of the building while the actual spending was ` 2.60 lakh.Vigilance SP Subash Das said though the department had booked nine cases, similar allegations had been made in almost all the schools in the district.He said taking advantage of the illiterate members of the village education committee and school education committee, the headmasters have allegedly siphoned off money meant for infrastructure development under SSA.
