THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The private partner for the Vizhinjam seaport project will be determined after obtaining security clearance from the Centre, Ports Minister K Babu told the Assembly on Monday. The decision was based on a recommendation by the Empowered Committee headed by the Chief Secretary, the Minister said. Two companies - Mundra Port and Special Economic Zone; and a  consortium of Welspun Infratech Ltd, Welspun Coporation Ltd and Leighton Contractors Pvt Ltd - had cleared technical scrutiny. The financial bids remain to be opened, but this will be done after the security clearance is obtained. The State Government had applied to the Centre for security clearance for both companies on September 15. The State Government had zoomed in on Mundra Port and the Welspun consortium last month from a list of 12 bidders. The one-year-long Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) for the project was on at the project site, the Minister said.
