WB girl ragging case: Visva-Bharati University lodges complaint with police
The girl, a first year Arts student from Sikkim, has accused three students of stripping her.

Kolkata: A day after the alleged ragging of a girl student was reported from the prestigious Visva-Bharati University in West Bengal's Shantiniketan, authorities on Saturday lodges a complaint with the police.

The girl, a first year Arts student from Sikkim, has accused three students of stripping her. One of the accused is a second year student, while the other two are third year students. They also took her photographs and threatened to circulate it if the incident was disclosed, she said.

Earlier in the day, authorities dismissed the girl's father's charges of asking him not to approach the police saying that the offenders will be punished.

Visva-Bharati University Vice Chancellor Sushanta Dutta Gupta said, "I haven't heard the father say that. This is completely untrue. We will go to the bottom of the case and we ensure that the guilty will be punished."

Gupta said that the university will inquire about the whole incident. He added, "I came to know about it on Thursday evening. We have a mechanism of Supreme Court guidelines, we have a standing committee. I believe the committee is going to submit the report."

Principal Shishir Shana also dismissed girl's father's claim. He said, "We never said that they shouldn't complain to the police. We never try to suppress or hide any incident. We do our best to punish the offenders. I want to assure that the girl will not face problems here and if anybody has done anything wrong, he/she will be punished."

The victim and her father left Visva Bharati for their home in Sikkim on Friday night.

The girl's father has alleged that the varsity officials discouraged them from reaching out to police or the media.

He said, "I asked the Principal if I could file an FIR and he said no to it. I also asked the Vice Chancellor about the same and even told him that the Principal had stopped me from filing an FIR and he said don't go to media or police nothing will happen. They will only harass your daughter. I will try to give you justice you shouldn't go to the police. They told me that they will give me justice but nothing has happened so far. So I thought I should go back and file an FIR."
