It is customary for vegetable prices to rise every year during the rainy season. This time too the prices of vegetables have skyrocketed. Among the surge, the price of beans has crossed the double century. Beans are cultivated in the northern parts of India, especially Himachal Pradesh.
The retail price of beans in Hubballi, Karnataka stands at Rs 200 per kilogram. It has become a vegetable of the rich. Due to the drought in Southern states, the traders are now importing beans from Himachal Pradesh at record prices.
Hubballi traders are importing beans via Delhi. A truckload of beans is brought to Hubballi every day. 15 tons of beans are being transported in each truck. The surrounding districts are supplied beans from here only. With low supply, the consumer demand has increased for beans in Karnataka. Thus, it is necessary to bring beans from North India, say traders.
A situation has arisen where those who buy a kg or half have now resorted to buying 250 grams or 100 grams. Due to the higher cost of transportation and drought, the price of beans has also increased. Vegetable Traders believe that this system will continue for many more days. It is also true that beans are now the vegetable of the rich.
The price of beans in Kolar and neighbourhood areas has gone from Rs 120 to Rs 200 per kg and from Rs 80 to Rs 170 per kg in the retail and wholesale markets respectively. Vijayalakshmi, secretary, of APMC Kolar, said the increase in temperature has resulted in many bean plants withering away in farms in the neighbouring towns, reducing daily supply from 40-45 quintals to 25 quintals.
