New Delhi: The Rajasthan High Court will decide on Wednesday whether Bollywood actor Salman Khan will have to cool his heels in the Jodhpur Central Jail for a longer duration or he be released on bail, pending his review petition.
Salman's counsel Hastimal Saraswat moved the review and bail petition in the high court on Saturday. But the court scheduled the hearing for Wednesday according to case listings.
A District and Sessions court in Jodhpur sentenced the actor to five years imprisonment on August 24 following his conviction in the nine-year-old chinkara poaching case.
Salman surrendered to the court the very next day and since then he has been lodged in the Jodhpur Central Jail as 'Prisoner 343'.
Khan has been kept in Barrack No 1.5 in the jail. The actor had spent three nights in the same barrack in April last year before he got bail.
According to legal proceedings, Salman would have to stay in the Central Jail till the final disposal of his bail plea. The petition has been listed for hearing at the court of Justice GK Vyas.
Salman's lawyers have sought the suspension of the actor's jail sentence till the time the revision petition is heard. There is a strong possibility that the court will grant bail to the actor on Wednesday.
As per the court procedure, the court is likely to ask for the records of the trial court on Wednesday. If this procedure is completed on the same day and the court receives the records in time, the judge will hear the bail plea on Wednesday itself.
If the procedure takes more time, the bail application might get delayed to Thursday or even later. In such an event, Salman will have to spend a longer time inside the jail.
Also if Salman is not out by Thursday, he will have to cool his heels till Monday as a lawyers’ strike scheduled for Friday is likely to stall the working of the court on Friday and the court will remain closed on Saturday and Sunday.
