Patna (Bihar): Bihar Women's Commission on Wednesday dismissed as absurd and baseless, reports that a woman committed 'sati' by jumping into the funeral pyre of her husband at a village in the state's Gaya district.
They termed it as nothing but a simple case of suicide.
Seventy seven-year-old Sita Devi had committed 'sati' by flinging herself on the pyre of her husband Sugreev Prasad at Siddhpur village under Imamganj police station on Friday, her sons said.
When contacted, state Women's Commission Chairperson Manju Prakash said the Commission, after enquiring from Sandip Poundrik, the District Magistrate of Gaya and the villagers, concluded that at it was "a simple case of suicide".
"There is not even an iota of evidence to prove that it is a case of the Sati Prohibition Act, 1987. Only a case of unnatural death is made out," she said, while endorsing the action taken by the district authorities to register a case of unnatural death.
Asked whether the Commission was considering the request of women's organisations to send a team for an inquiry, Prakash said, "It will be a meaningless exercise. We know the competence and integrity of Gaya DM Poundrik and the demand of registration of a case under prohibition of Sati Act is improper".
Several women's organisations have demanded a proper probe into the incident and stressed that action should be taken against Magadh Range DIG Arvind Pandey.
