THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A 45 year-old woman, found near Thycaud Government Hospital with a new-born baby in her arms, was taken into custody by the Thampanoor police on Thursday night after the local people raised suspicion. The woman was identified as Suma, hailing from Rajaji Nagar Colony (Chengalchoola) in the city. The baby girl, according to the police, was barely three days old.  Police said that the local people, including vendors near the hospital, grew suspicious at the sight of the  woman loitering in the area with the child in her arms around 10 p.m. They informed the police, who took her into custody. Police found that the child had a locket enlaced with an anklet on which the name ‘AMBIKA’ was etched.  During interrogation, the woman claimed that she got the child from a young woman who had come to abandon the child in the Ammathottil of the State Child Welfare Council. She found the woman, along with her mother and child in a confused state near the Child Welfare Council as they could not abandon the child due to the presence of other people there. Suma acquainted with them and offered to keep the baby for herself, which they readily agreed, the police said. The police said that no child missing case had been registered in any of the police stations in the city limits. They are currently probing whether any woman named Ambika had given birth to a girl at any of the hospitals in the city.
