CHENNAI: A five-day national workshop on ‘Communication options to teach the deaf’ conducted by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) in collaboration with the Balavidyalaya Institute for Teacher Training began in the city on Monday.Kannegi Packianathan, Secretary, Department of Welfare for the Differently-abled, inaugurated the workshop in the presence of Major General (Retd) Ian Cardozo, chairman of the Rehabilitation Council of India.In the five-day workshop, leading experts from the field would present papers on Oralism, Education al Bilingualism (sign language) and Total Communication. The presentations slated during the five-day workshop would highlight the pre-requisites for each option, techniques of teaching in the chosen option and the role of course coordinators in training the teachers of the hearing impaired on all the three options.India has signed the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) that talks about the various options that have to be made available to the children with disabilities. According to the organisers, the five-day workshop would be the first step towards achieving this goal.The experts and the participating teachers from different parts of the country will discuss, deliberate and come to a conclusion on what needs to be done immediately so that schools can decide on what methods to offer and children will have the option to choose.
