New Delhi: Defender Gurpreet Singh's brace helped visitors Pune Strykers down Delhi Wizards 3-1 in the World Series Hockey match played here at the Major Dhyanchand National Stadium on Saturday.
In a match that largely belonged to some sensational saves by goalkeepers Kamaldeep Singh (Delhi) and Gurpreet Guri (Pune), Pune's drag-flick expert Gurpreet scored off a penalty corner (53rd) and penalty stroke (60th) to settle the issue in his side's favour.
Pune went into the lead as early as the 5th minute through Argentine Mario Almada in a goal-mouth melee. Delhi equalised in the second quarter through German Philip Sunkel (27th) after a terrific move stitched by Delhi skipper Rajpal Singh and Vikram Kanth.
But Gurpreet's penalty corner conversion in the third quarter made it 2-1. However, the final scoreline was decided in the 60th minute when the umpire awarded Pune a penalty stroke after South African Lungile Tsolekile was brought down in the circle. Gurpreet converted it to make it 3-1.
The Wizards had made a winning start to their WSH campaign on Friday, when they edged Karnataka Lions 3-2, with Rajpal scoring the winner for them.
In the first match on Saturday evening, Sher-E-Punjab routed Karnataka Lions 6-1 while in the second Pakistan international Syed Imran Warsi scored a hat-trick as Chennai Cheetahs beat Chandigarh Comets 5-3.
