Court grants Zaheera Sheikh and mother time till My 9 to record their plea on perjury charges of the Best Bakery case.

Mumbai: A sessions court granted time till May 9 to Zaheera Sheikh and her mother Sahrunissa to record their plea on the charges against them for giving false evidence in the Best Bakery case on Friday.

Both appeared before the court to give the plea but said that they needed time to think about pleading guilty or not guilty to the charges. In case they pleaded guilty, the court would pronounce its verdict on the same day.

However, if they plead not guilty to the charges of giving false evidence, they would have to face a summary trial, Judge Abhay Thipsay said.

The Judge read out the charges to Zaheera and her mother and explained the accusations against them. Zaheera told the court that she did not wish to make any statement. Thereupon the Judge said this amounted to pleading not guilty to the charges and he was about to record her plea to this effect.

However, Zaheera's lawyer Umesh Deshpande sought the leave of the Judge to seek instructions from his client and after meeting Zaheera told the court that she wanted to make a statement but needed time to think.

Sahrunissa sought time to give her plea saying she was under great tension because the landlord of her rented house had asked her to quit the place this month-end.

Accordingly, the Judge granted time to both till May nine to record their plea to the charges of giving false evidence. Zaheera's sister Sahira banu and brother Nasibullah also appeared before the court but were asked to come again on Saturday for recording their plea.
