Dreams come true if you work hard. Mukesh Kumar is proof.
Son of a taxi driver, Mukesh became the most expensive cricketer from Bengal in the IPL auction, breaking the record long held by former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly. Delhi Capitals bought him for Rs 5 crore and 50 lakh.
Ganguly had earned a maximum of Rs 4 crore and 37 lakh in IPL for a season.
A resident of Gopalganj, Mukesh’s father wanted his son to join the Central Reserve Police Force and he himself, as a child, dreamt of joining the army, even tried three times but his pursuit ended in a failure.
Mukesh started his cricket carer in his native Bihar and initially represented the state at the Under-19 level. But in 2015, he got a chance in Bengal’s senior team.
He eventually got rewarded for his consistency for Bengal and was selected for India ‘A’ for an unofficial Test match against New Zealand ‘A’ team. In that match, he took five wickets.
In the Irani Cup, he also picked up four wickets and expressed his gratitude towards India A team coach VVS Laxman who was once the batting consultant of Bengal. He said that the advice from the legendary batter worked for him.
He used to play in Shivpur club and made his first-class debut on 30 October in during the 2015–16 Ranji Trophy season. He made his List A debut on 13 December 2015 while playing in Vijay Hazare Trophy.
He then made his T20 debut on 6 January 2016 in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Mukesh has taken 130 wickets in 34 first-class matches so far and has taken more than five wickets in an innings six times.
It hasn’t been an easy journey for Mukesh as he made it to the Indian cricket team. In December 2022, received his first call-up to the Indian cricket team for their T20 International (T20I) series against Sri Lanka.
Mukesh, who impressed the legendary Waqar Younis, would want to repay the faith DC team management has shown in him.
