'All Is Well' to 'Paa': 11 films that help us understand the dynamics of father-son relationship
Different father-son relationships and their complexities as seen in a few Bollywood movies.

A father becomes a friend when he feels his son has grown up. But seems that sons become rebellious when their potential is underestimated and it turns out that they are not as undisciplined or insincere as they are judged to be. Right when they find the right direction, their goal and that little motivating trigger, they leave everyone surprised, and their dads bewildered and proud. And it’s beautiful how the fathers come to their sons’ rescue in crucial moments and vice-a-versa. Here are some examples of different father-son relationships and their complexities as seen in a few Bollywood movies.

All is Well

All is Well is an upcoming movie in which Rishi Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan who are playing father and son respectively undertake a road-trip. They have a comical element to their relationship. Both of them keep pulling each other’s leg all the time. They pick each other’s mistakes and keep rambling about them. The son gets really irritated when his father, who runs a bakery, takes a huge loan and loses his mother’s jewelry but comes to his father’s rescue when the lender is out to get him.

3 Idiots

Farhan Qureshi (played by R. Madhavan), who is very passionate about wildlife photography, pursues an engineering degree to pacify his father Mr Qureshi (played by Parikshit Sahni), despite his lack of interest in the career. His father is a strict but loving parent. After hearing about Farhan’s friend who tries to commit suicide because of pressure to win bread and butter for his family, Mr. Qureshi realizes that he just wants his son to be happy and not to anything similar like the boy in his college. Support from his father gives Farhan the hope and courage to live the dream of his life and he takes training under his favourite wildlife photographer and becomes an accomplished one too.

Waqt: The Race Against Time

Even the birds have to put their hatchlings into the risk of being on their own, to enable them to learn to fly. Something similar happens in this movie when Ishwarchand Thakur’s (played by Amitabh Bachchan) son named Aditya Thakur (played by Akshay Kumar) who is irresponsible and has no goals in life runs away with his girlfriend, Pooja. Ishwar decides to make Aditya realize his responsibilities after he comes to know that Pooja is pregnant and asks Aditya to leave the house along with her. Aditya begins to hate his father and starts living with her in a room at the back of the house in the garden. However, having to deal with everything from taking care of Pooja and the child, to financing the basic needs of his small family makes Aditya realize his responsibilities.

Lakshya

Karan Shergill (played by Hrithik Roshan) who has no plans for his future despite dissent from his parents applies at the Indian Military Academy (IMA, Dehradun) when his friend does the same. Karan remains a hidden gem to his father until he gets selected. However, his undisciplined nature keeps getting him into trouble. He ends up running away from the academy. When he comes home his father starts feeling that Karan will remain irresponsible throughout his life. But Karan deals with the situation maturely and returns to the IMA. He takes his punishment and becomes a focused and disciplined cadet leader. Later he graduates as officer Lieutenant Karan Shergill and makes his father feel very proud.

Wake Up Sid

Sid (played by Ranbir Kapoor) is a fun person and enjoys spending his father's (Ram Mehra, a wealthy businessman played by Anupam Kher) money. He hardly goes to college. The day after his final exams end, his father tells him to join his company for a month to which Sid reluctantly agrees when his father promises him a new car. When the exam results come out, Sid finds out that he has failed. His failure leads to an intense family fight that ends with him moving out. Sid begins to find his life meaningful when he begins to work. He realizes how his behavior hurt his loved ones and changes for the better. When he receives his first paycheck, he meets his father and they reconcile.

Krrish 3

Rohit Mehra, a scientist, and Krrish, his superhero son, face an elaborate conspiracy orchestrated by his other son, the evil genius Kaal. Kaal was created in an experiment conducted by Dr. Arya while Rohit, was held hostage by him many years ago. The child was born handicapped and was given away to an orphanage from where he was adopted by a wealthy man. Kaal used his father’s bone marrow to successfully cure his handicap and murdered Krrish. Deeply disturbed by Krrish’s death, Rohit decides to re-use his failed experiment to bring dead tissues to life in order to save his son. The process killed Rohit but he transferred all his powers to revive Krrish. Krrish resurrects and manages to kill Kaal using his father’s solar experiment.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

Imraan (played by Farhan Akhtar) has a personal quest of finding his biological father Salman Habib (played by Naseeruddin Shah), an artist in Spain.

After Imraan and his two friends get into a fight with a stranger on whom they had tried to pull a prank, they are jailed. When Imraan’s father comes to know this, he bails them out and takes them to his home. Salman states the reason behind him not contacting Imraan and his mother for several years to be his reluctance in taking responsibility of a married life with kids.

Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani

Bunny (played by Ranbir Kapoor) used to take his relationships for granted. His father (played by Farooq Sheikh) tried to instill good moral values in Bunny but Bunny was busy chasing his dreams. He got so engrossed and occupied that when he was in another country for work, he didn’t check his phone for several days. However, when he did, he got a message that his father was no more. Though he felt guilty but it was too late as he just had his father’s teachings left with him.

Main Hoon Na

Brigadier Shekhar Sharma (played by Naseeruddin Shah) falls prey to a stray bullet, while on a mission and on his deathbed he confesses to his son, Major Ram Prasad Sharma (played by Shahrukh Khan) that his wife and son had left him many years ago due to his infidelity. He expresses his last wish of seeing his family reunited under one roof, and dies.

Student of the Year

Rohan Nanda (played by Varun Dhawan), the son of a business tycoon, Ashok Nanda (played by Ram Kapoor) shared a complex relationship with his father. Rohan tried to bag the Student of the Year trophy to make his father feel proud. In the final segment of the competition, Rohan won but refused to accept the award when he came to know that his friend intentionally lost to him to teach Mr. Ashok (who was enjoying watching his own son lose), a lesson.

Paa

Auro (played by Amitabh Bachchan), an intelligent and witty 12-year-old boy with an extremely rare genetic disorder called progeria was the son of Amole Arte (played by Abhishek Bachchan), a young and cold-blooded politician. However, Auro’s mother hid Auro’s father’s identity. Auro lost confidence in his father but agreed to visit him when he was told the truth. He tried to get his mother and father back together, but his mother resisted because she was still hurt by the fact that Amole wanted her to have an abortion when they first found out she was pregnant. However, Auro manages to reunite his mother and father and succumbing to his disease, says his last words "Maa" and "Paa" before dying with a satisfied smile.
