The Chaturmas period consists of four months according to the Hindu calendar – Shravan, Bhadrapada, Ashwin and Kartik.

It is believed in Hinduism that Lord Vishnu goes into a deep slumber during the period of Chaturmas. The Chaturmas period consists of four months according to the Hindu calendar – Shravan, Bhadrapada, Ashwin and Kartik. It is going to affect the dates of important festivals in Hinduism, which are expected to be celebrated earlier. A renowned priest gives more information on what to avoid in this period. This year, the period of Chaturmas is going to start from July 17 on the day of Devshayani Ekadashi and is expected to last 118 days, according to Panchang calculations. As per more information, it will end on November 12, which will be the day of Dev Uthani Ekadashi. During this period, all the auspicious practices and work are stopped; however, religious practices are continued by the believers.

Because of the period of Chaturmas, festivals like Janmashtami, Dussehra and Diwali, are going to be celebrated 11 days earlier. These festivals are going to be on August 26, October 12 and November 1 respectively.

Pandit Harishankar Mishra from the Shakti Mandir talked exclusively to Local18, detailing Lord Vishnu’s slumber. He says that Lord Vishnu starts his sleep on the day of Shukla Paksha Ekadashi in the Ashadha month. Then he wakes up on Shukla Paksha Ekadashi day, of the Kartik month. The day is also known as Dev Uthani Ekadashi. Pandit Mishra explained further, that during the time of Chaturmas, auspicious activities like marriage, yagnopavit, mundan and namkaran are forbidden.

He talked about what to avoid in this period. According to him, a believer should avoid consuming green vegetables, rice, meat and alcohol, as it is considered inauspicious. One must observe a vow of celibacy. The use of shoes, slippers and oil should also be avoided. Sacrifices or any special rituals done for Lord Vishnu are to be strictly avoided.
